Different Kinds Of Line Marking On Roads

When out on the roads, whether you are driving or crossing the road, you must have come across line marking in different colours and styles. Those lines on roads are meant to convey essential information to the drivers and pedestrians who use the roads for walking, driving, or parking. As different countries have different set of rules for marking the roads, it can be difficult to remember the meaning and information provided by the line-markings. Still, there is a uniformity of those markings within a country.

Those surface markings and lines on paved roadways are meant to provide guidance and information, and these markings can avoid any confusion and uncertainty. Typically, the most common line markings you will come across are the lines.  You can find different types of lines on the roads such as standard solid lines, wide dines, diagonal lines, double lines, skip lines and dual colour lines. Each of them has different indication and you need to know the rules behind these lines.

 Different Types Of Line Markings

Line Marking

Here are some common but different surface markings you will come across on the roads. Quality road line marking paints are used to create those lines.

  • Solid lines – A standard line is a monocoloured solid line which will indicate the proper position of the driver on the roadway. The most common colours used are white and yellow. A line marking tape is used to make such markings.

  • Wide lines – The wider lines on the roads are used to indicate stop and pedestrian crossings. One is likely to come across lines of varying widths on the road, and often a combination of two or three spray guns may be required to create those lines. You can find such solid wide lines in the airport.

  • Skip lines- If you see single broken line segments on the road, these are known as Skip lines. These are used on intersections and highways for numerous applications such as work as traffic lines to separate traffic flow or in the centre line of road to separate opposite streams of traffic.

  • Double lines - Double lines are often placed in the centre of the road and indicate the separating line of the traffic flow. They also indicate if crossing from one side to another is allowed or not. There can be two solid lines or one solid line united with one skip line to make the double line.

  • Dual colour lines – While the dual colour lines are not so common, but they are used for specific situations. In some countries, traffic lanes are marked with yellow dual colour lines, and these lines are also used on airports as they create a distinct contrast.

Line Marking
  • Diagonal lines – It is common to come across parallel diagonal lines in the non-driving zones. They are straight solid lines that are often done manually.  You can also adjust the spray tips to spray under a certain angle, or you can use auto-layout function of your sprayer for such line marking.

The line marking thread or machines are often used to make those larkers on the road and with pinpoint accuracy. The paint used for line marking comprises of pigments, resins, and solvents. Pigments are first finely grounded, and resins are added to work as a binder, and the resins and pigments are then mixed with water or solvents before applying to the road surface.  Apart from the public roads, you can also use such lines in your own driveways and you can make your property more attractive with these lines.
