STRESS STRAIN MEASUREMENT - A BRIEF ON ITS USAGE

And stress is the pressure exerted on a material object. Measuring the stress of an object is also called stress strain measurement.

Necessity of Strain Measurement

Stress-strain measurement is a method of determining the level of stress on a material through experimental stress analysis. The process involves measuring the strain and using the known properties of the material, such as elasticity and Poisson's ratio, to determine the magnitude and direction of the mechanical stress. The calculation is based on Hooke's Law, which states that there is a proportional relationship between the strain and stress of a material due to its elasticity.

How to Measure Strain?

The effects of strain on the material need to understand before understanding how can measure strain. Will change object length if the strain is applied to the object. Strain is a non-dimensional value. It represents the change in the length of a material compared to its initial length. A micrometer per meter is generally used to measure the strain.

Electrical strain gauges are widely used and have been offered by HBM for over 60 years. They work by converting mechanical extensions and compressions into changes in resistance.

HBM also offers fiber optic strain sensors, which are based on Fiber Bragg Grating Technology and are used for structural monitoring and material testing. These optical sensors provide a non-invasive and highly accurate method for measuring strain. 

Usage Of Strain Measurement

As strain measurement is used to measure the elastic and plastic strain on any material, it is used for many applications to measure stress-strain.

  • Strain measurement is used on tie rods for the steel industry.
  • Apply on unique material like stones or composite material: carbon fiber paddle handles, helicopter blades, marble columns, stones like marble and tuffs, artificial human teeth, etc.,
  • Stain measurement is also used for installation on pressurized objects, such as paper industry's dryer cylinders, diesel engine common rail, centrifugal compressor casing, moist-heat industrial sterilizers for the food industry, and CNG tanks for buses.
  • Aside, it is used to install sub-merge-like centrifugal compressor casing and centrifugal pump.
  • Strain gauges also install for thermal characterization, such as specimen tie rods for the steel industry, thermal characterization of steel specimens, natural ventilation laboratory oven, etc.

Stress strain measurement is performed to measure the stress generated by machinery in mechanical engineering development and in the field of component testing of aircraft, like linkages, structural damage, etc.  after considering all the above factors, it must be clear to you by now that stress strain measurement process comes to great usage in every segment in today’s world.
