Hot water is a thing that is required on a daily basis in any home especially in cold countries. The water heater is indeed an essential appliance and like any other major appliance it has a lifespan after which it becomes non functional. Running out of hot water supply can be pretty painful in times of need.

tend to consume more energy. These appliances can consume up to 50% of the
total electricity requirement of the entire house. This is not at all energy
efficient and can cost you a fortune on monthly electricity bill and may easily
exceed your monthly home budget. This is not a green option either. Hot water units must be replaced when the
time arises. But how will you determine that the time has come to replace your
geysers. Following are four key signs that tell you that you need to say good
bye to your old water heaters and welcome the new ones.

- Soiled or rusty water supply: A perfectly fine hot water unit will always give out clear hot water. Instead if it gives soiled, rusty or coloured water be alarmed. It is a prominent sign of corrosion inside the water unit. The first and foremost sign of appliance deterioration is development of rust inside its tanks, valves and pipelines. Muddy water indicates sedimentation inside the appliance and call for immediate replacement.
- Water leaking from water heater: Standing water accumulation around the hot water unit or water dripping from it may be indicative of a serious internal malfunction. In such cases the best solution is to call for professional help. You may not be able to fix such leakages yourself and in most cases there are no short term solutions to this problem. Replacing the unit may seem to be the only way out. Make sure you disconnect all electrical supplies and gas units are turned off and let the appliance cool before the replacement takes place.

- Nasty cracking noises: Any hot water service makes a significant sound while the water inside it is heating up. But that can be easily distinguished from loud cracks and popping or rumbling noises. When there is enough sedimentation accumulated inside the appliance loud noise may generate from the water tank. The sediments harden on continuous process of reheating. On contact with heating substance the sediment actually burns and makes a lot of noise. This noise is indicative of the mineral accumulation inside the tank which is a predominant sign that your geyser needs to be replaced.
- Age of geyser: The average lifespan of any hot water unit is not more than ten years. Some really good quality water heaters may last up to fifteen years. But that is the limit of it. Try to remember when your geyser was installed. If you fail to recollect the time frame it may be time for you to get a new water heating system. It is very crucial to remember the age of the appliance. If you tend to forget you may check the serial number printed on the upper part of its body. If it looks old enough don’t delay in replacing it.
