A dentist makes diagnosis, prevents and treats diseases of the oral cavity. They have their own supporting team to help them in oral health services. The supporting team includes dental assistants, dental technicians, dental hygienists and also a dental therapist.

The main duty of dentists is to examine the oral and dental health of patients and treat them according to their problems. The role of a general dentist is more or less similar to that of a primary care physician in which they take care of the entire dental needs of patients. They have a lot of responsibilities according to their specialty and their professional responsibilities are divided accordingly. Their duties include diagnosis, treatment and providing preventive and healing care for problems that is affecting the patient’s teeth and mouth. Many of them like to work as self-employed practitioners. Others work as specialist in various hospital dentistry, community dentistry, and co-operative dental practice groups or in armed forces.


The duties and responsibilities of dentists include:
  • Educating patients regarding their oral health and habits
  • Pleasing and well-timed treatment is desired
  • Proper cleaning and repairing teeth, fitting crowns, extracting teeth when required and administering anesthesia before dental course of action
  • Top dental staff is required for proper care of the patient
  • They also refer patients to specialists if required
Some dentists to practice on their own are in charge of the office management as well.


Responsibilities of dentists who practice of their own include:
  • Keeping patients dental records
  • Recruitment, training and managing staff
  • Handle the budgets and maintain the dental equipment stocks
  • Advertising their service to the potential clients

Cons

  • In order to become dentist, you have to spend a long time in school and high school. Dental students must attend some specific classes before entering the dental school. So, you will have to spend 7 to 8 years or more in studying dentistry and becoming dentists.
  • You will have to spend much more time in doing demanding and strenuous work on your patients. Most of them work full time and some work in weekends also.
  • This is a very stressful job. You have to manage patients as well as staffs, run your business, compete with other dentists etc. you will not get enough time for yourself. The work will be tedious and defined.
There is no denying the fact that the profession of dentist provides them a sense of accomplishment because there cannot be more satisfaction in anything which a person gets by taking out his patients from unbearable dental pain.
